Ash Wednesday On The CSX And The RTA

Another Jimbaux Original

It was Ash Wednesday, and it was time to meet up with my woadies The Mid-City Marine and his lovely lady for poboys followed by coffee.  Before that, though, it was time to check out what was happening on the CSX, namely, this yard job:

That’s not terribly exciting, now is it?  At the very least, though, as the subheadline indicates, this is the first time I ever do this shot, at least that I can remember.  Now, also, you can find my Alvar Street perch too.

After some stupidity on the W’ank – my faith in law enforcement and the justice system, not to mention public education, and therefore government itself, is at an all-time low – it was time to meet my pals for poboys.  On the way, I got a little bit more flanged-wheel-on-steel-rail action, this time from the Regional Transit Authority at Saint Charles Avenue.

Yes, kiddies, the day after Mardi Gras still has plenty of parade silliness abound.

Below is a house between St. Charles Avenue and Prytania.  We were going to the Still Perkin’ coffee shop, a place that I patronized plenty back in 2006 and 2007 when I was working plenty in this neighborhood.

I’ve always (as long as I’ve known of its existence) thought that the cemetery wall here was a bit peculiar.

And, finally, there was one more picture after this.

Thanks for stopping by.  I watched an interesting video this morning, and another one from Bill Maher is even better, but I still don’t feel like saying much.  I’m not in the best of moods right now, partly due to this stupid cough I’m battling, and partly due to the stupidity that I suspect caused it.  Hopefully, I’ll find some inspiration with which to strike myself soon.

James, I loved the composition of the first photo – the curved arch of the larger bridge and the straight lines of the train and the smaller bridge. There was something very engaging about the image, with all the motion and busyness within the photo. Another nice job. Peter

I’d disaree with that first photo being not terribly exciting, I think it’s a great shot and those switchers leading cab forward reminds me of the SW-8s that went past my school as a kid. I agree with everything Peter said. It’s a great railroad image! I also enjoyed the city shots as well, never having made it down that far.

Hey James,
get better, hear??? Lots of hot tea, lemon, honey (the kind from bees, you know!)…
and take another look at that first pix…
I find it really stunning…lots of angles… Not so much a ‘railroad photograph’, but a modern industrial piece,… in the vein of what Stieglitz did…back in the 20s and 30s…

and the local color… beads hanging from trees, folks waiting for trains… the girl seeking money for her track team…
brings it back to the ‘hometown’… very local… excellent work…
Oh… and BILL Maher is EXACTLY right… he and Chris Hitchens…
nothing wrong with faith in supreme being; JUST don’t seek to ram it down everyone ELSES throat, a la Santorum..

Thanks, guys. I guess the first one is good, though there must be some reason that I’ve never done it until this day (maybe because it’s hard to know when a train is leaving Gentilly Yard in this direction.) I guess I do like seeing the inclined plane of I-10 up the bridge, but I think that the plane of the surface of the bridge is a bit too close to the locomtives. Ah, I’m so picky! I’m pleased that you like it all.
