On The Way To And At Monroe – 6 June 2008

This may come as a surprise to many of you, but until June 2008, despite having traveled to the far corners of the contiguous United States of America, parts of Canada, and various parts of northern Mexico, I had never been to the northeastern part of my home state.  That the annual KCSHS convention was being held in Monroe in 2008 allowed an opportunity to address that deficiency.

I Feel Like I Don’t Even Know You Anymore

I recall getting off to a late start out of New Orleans on the morning of Friday 6 June 2008.  I probably didn’t care that much.  This was not going to be some epic get-trackside-by-the-crack-of-dawn foaming adventure.  Perhaps I was looking forward a few weeks to my indeed epic journey to North Dakota.  Perhaps.  Whatever the case, it was already high sun time by the time I got to the Bonnet Carré Spillway and heard the KCS train M-SHCX come through.  Actually, if I remember correctly, I intercepted him in LaPlace and doubled back to the spillway for these shots.

I have no idea what the man in these pictures is doing.

What I do know is that some clouds arrived shortly after this picture was taken and ruined the wider shots that I took of this train as it stretched across the spillway.  Oh well.  I hope that these shots of Birmingham Southern gondolas on the train offer some solace.

After that, I recall eating at the Raising Cane’s in LaPlace, which seemed and still seems weird, for some reason.  I don’t know.

Lord, Give Us A Sign

Further on, in Avoyelles Parish, we see this.

Okay.

Monroe, The Destination

Here we are in Monroe, and I don’t quite remember what this is.

This would be the last KCSHS convention that I attended, and the last time that I’d ever see the Shadow Warrior, who died in March 2013.

That’s all.  Thanks.

Much as I like the Retro Belles, it was good to see some of the old stuff still in gray. I see so much grain and coal up here, seeing the boxcar train at Monroe was a treat!!
