At Least They Weren’t Giving Me The Bird

by Jim on 2011/03/02

Before all the foamers in the audience permanently abandon this site because the last three posts were not railroad-related, let me offer you guys this.

There was some recent discussion on some of the foamer forums about when it was appropriate and when it was inappropriate to show photos of railroad employees at work, as they could be caught breaking any of the dozens of sometimes conflicting rules.  One thing that seemed to be a consensus was that if the crewman seemed to be enjoying being photographed, like by waving, that it was okay to publish the picture.

Back in 2007

So, here I am showing you a duet of shots taken in the summer of 2007 along the Kansas City Southern Railway.  The first is a shot of one of the hostler crewmen  at Pittsburg, Kansas, taking distributed power units off of northbound empty coal trains.

Hey, at least he wasn’t giving me the bird, right?

Chico

Recognize this guy?  You whoadies and foamers who read the NOLA Post last July will recognize him from this article about the demolition of the KCS yard tower in New Orleans.

I seem to recall that his wife’s reaction to these pictures was “hot, hot, hot!”

What do the rest of you ladies think?  Does Nina have a “hot” husband?

Rotation!

Patricia got the correct answer in the question posed below the picture in the “Random Friday Shot” image; the shot needs to be rotated about 1° clockwise.

Merci, mes amis.

I lived in NY City for almost 30 years(born there) and getting the bird from LIRR crews was not uncommon. Fortunately, most of the train crews I have encountered have been reasonable people, if not friendly. I try to do my thing and stay out of the way, which I’m sure they appreciate. Some crews were real hams, though. I have shot pictures on the D&H for many years, some of those guys would almost fall out the of the cab posing.

For those who don’t know, LIRR is the Long Island Railroad.

Tom,
You answered your own post when you said you got the bird from LIRR crews in New York City. Its cause they are from New York City, 🙂
